Zombie computers

Zombie computers are in a general case machines connected typically to internet and which without the knowledge and consent from their users have installed software allowing them to be controlled from outside.

Such software is in most of the cases similar in terms of operation to a Trojan horse. Such attacks lead to the exploitation of a computer to concoct several types of illegal acts (without the knowledge and consent of its user), including for example DDoS attacks.

Counteraction:
Programs used for external control of the computers are typically installed through unprotected attachments received with electronic mail, links sent via Internet communicators and falsified web pages. In the light of such grand threats - prevention is indispensable. It is advised to apply appropriate protection mechanisms, especially in the form of implementation of security policies, update management, installation of antivirus systems as well as employee training. The lack of appropriate protection mechanism may result in the loss of confidential information, degradation of the company reputation, fiscal and financial consequences and many more (e.g. in the form of spending spam with the use of company computers and servers).

Technical protection:
Further information about the individual means of protection depends on the number of workstations, network diameter and coverage as well as the inherent risk - more information can be found on the sub page [audit of network technologies].
